Growing Number of Certified Platforms Drives Market Adoption for UltraWideband Technology
(via Press Release from WiMedia – February 5, 2008) San Ramon, California – The WiMedia ® Alliance today announced that it has certified an additional seven platforms on its Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Common Radio Platform. These platforms – from member companies Artimi Inc., LucidPort Technology, Inc., NEC Electronics Corporation and NXP Semiconductors – bring the total number of WiMedia platform certifications to 19, enabling the continued wide-scale development of WiMedia-based end-user products for the CE, PC and mobile device markets.
WiMedia Certification is awarded to platforms that successfully complete all phases of the Alliance’s rigorous interoperability testing program. This designation signifies compliance with the Alliance’s international UWB standards (ISO/IEC 26907 and 26908) and provides assurance to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original device manufacturers (ODMs) that WiMedia Certified platforms will perform with a high level of interoperability, and will coexist with other nearby WiMedia-based devices.
“Competition and variety in the market will be key factors in driving the continued adoption
of WiMedia-based UWB devices,” said Stephen Wood, president of the WiMedia Alliance.
“We are extremely pleased with the increasing number of manufacturers who are certifying platforms. Their offerings provide choice to OEMs and ODMs interested in incorporating UWB into their products, and help foster the level of diversity necessary to keep UWB technology thriving in the market.”
WiMedia Certified platforms provide the foundation for a variety of high-speed wireless protocols, including Certified Wireless USB from the USB Implementers Forum. These applications offer consumers the convenience of streamlined connection of devices within the personal area network (PAN), without the hassle of tangled cords and cables.
