China completed the evaluation of UWB and allows spectrum use for WiMedia devices. With this decision, UWB now has a regulatory footprint which extends through Asia, Europe and North America.
(via Press Release from WiMedia Alliance – February 2, 2009) San Ramon, California – The WiMedia Alliance, the industry association that promotes the regulation and standardization of Ultra Wideband (UWB) worldwide, today announced that China’s Ministry of Information Industry Technology (MIIT) has approved spectrum use for UWB in China. Effective immediately, UWB can now be deployed in China to meet the growing demand for short-range, high-speed wireless communications.
The approved bands are 3 and 7 through 11 (4.2 – 4.8GHz and 6 – 9GHz approximately). A graphical representation is available at WiMedia’s website about the worldwide UWB regulatory status.
“We are very pleased to see that China has completed their evaluation of UWB and has elected to allocate spectrum,” said Stephen Wood, president of the WiMedia Alliance. “With this decision, UWB now has a regulatory footprint which extends through Asia, Europe and North America.”
“For UWB to become policy for China is a major milestone in the adoption and strength this technology,” said Roberto Aiello, vice president of technology for WiMedia. “This is a testament to the advances being made by MIIT and to the WiMedia Regulatory Group commitment and diligence.”
China now joins a growing number of markets worldwide which have approved the use of UWB, including the USA, EU, Korea and Japan. Regulatory agencies in other regions are actively working with the WiMedia Alliance to further broaden the adoption of UWB. It is indicative of the broad acceptance of the technology as the preferred choice for implementing Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs).
About MIIT
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) directs the upgrading of technologies among the nation’s industries, encourages innovation and promotes electronic communications and high technology. The State Radio Regulation Committee (SRRC) is the part of MIIT which has responsibility for certification testing of approvals for UWB radios in China.
About the WiMedia Alliance
The WiMedia Alliance is a not-for-profit open industry association that promotes and enables the rapid adoption, regulation, standardization and multi-vendor interoperability of ultra-wideband (UWB) worldwide. The basis for the industry’s first UWB standards (published by Ecma International), WiMedia UWB is optimized for wireless personal-area networks delivering high-speed (480Mbps and beyond), low-power multimedia capabilities for the PC, CE, mobile and automotive market segments. Emphasizing peaceful coexistence with other wireless services, the WiMedia UWB Common Radio Platform is designed to operate with application stacks developed by the Certified Wireless USB Promoter Group, the Bluetooth- SIG and proprietary implementations. WiMedia board members include Alereon, CSR, Intel, Nokia, NXP Semiconductors, Samsung Electronics, Staccato Communications and Wisair.
