Imation Unveils Wireless USB Based Audio/Video Extender

New, Imation Link Wireless Audio/Video Extender streams content from your computer to your TV or projector using fast, reliable Wireless USB technology from Alereon.

(via Press Release from Imation – August 25, 2010) Oakdale, Minnesota – Imation Corp today introduced the Imation Link™ Wireless A/V Extender designed to stream content from your PC or Mac to a television or projector.

Imation Link projects audio and high-definition video content – Internet TV, movies, photos, computer games and even business presentations – to a television or projector without the hassle of tangled cords or costly cables. Unlike any other wireless-sharing solution today, the PC- and Mac-compatible device supports high-definition video (up to 720p), high-resolution photos (up to 1080p) and stereo audio. Using ultra-wideband WUSB 2.0, the Imation Link delivers significantly faster transfer speeds and lower power consumption than traditional WiFi.

“With Imation Link, you can watch your favorite movies streaming online or from a DVD, keep up with the latest TV shows and videos from sites like YouTube and Hulu, play your favorite computer games, and even video chat with friends and family – all on a big screen,” said Jason Elles, global brand manager for Imation. “And because the link uses wireless USB 2.0, an industry standard ultra-wideband technology, it is a reliable and secure way to stream digital audio and video assets, making it perfect for both home or business use.”

Sleek Design and Convenient Installation

The Link’s sleek design includes an attractive, fin-shaped receiver in glossy black that connects to your HDTV or conference room projector using HDMI or VGA input. The wireless transmitter connects to a standard USB port on a laptop or desktop. With all the PC necessary drivers included on the WUSB transmitter, there’s no complicated network setup, and no downloading required. A Mac driver is also enclosed on a CD for installation.

Speed and Stability

The Link features a directional antenna for improved performance, enabling up to 30-feet of wireless line-of-site range. Because it uses Wireless USB one-to-one connectivity, you’ll never experience Wi-Fi interference.

Extended Desktop Mode

You can enhance your viewing experience through the extended desktop mode feature. Either duplicate the image on your computer in “mirror mode” on your TV, or drag content from the computer to the TV to create an extension of your “desktop”

Specifications

The Imation Link receiver is 10.875” by 4.0” x 5.5” and comes in satin black. The system is compatible with Windows XP, Vista or 7 and Mac operating systems. In addition, Imation Link’s Certified Wireless USB 2.0 technology seamlessly works with other Certified Wireless USB products. It works in the following frequencies: United States 3.1-4.8 GHz, EU, Singapore, NZ, Canada: 6.3 – 7.9 GHz, Japan, Korea, China: 7.3 – 9.0 GHz.

Pricing and Availability

The Imation Link is available in the United States at amazon.com and other select distributors for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $149.99.

Alereon Demonstrates First WUSB Solution For iPhone And iPod

Alereon to showcase iPhone/iPod Wireless USB peripheral reference design at COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2009. First peripheral demonstrates high throughput WUSB connectivity for the iPhone and iPod consumer.

Apple iPhone(via Press Release from Alereon – June 1, 2009) Austin, Texas – Alereon, Inc., the Certified Wireless USB technology leader for Worldwide Ultra Wideband (UWB) WiMedia solutions, today announced the first demonstration of an Apple iPhone/iPod peripheral reference design based on the new worldwide, low power 90nm-LP AL5301 chip built at Samsung’s 12inch wafer fabrication facility in Korea.

The demonstration consists of a small WUSB peripheral connected to a typical iPhone or iPod’s edge connector. The adapter enables any iPhone or iPod to both provide extra battery power/charging as well as synchronize wirelessly to iTunes whether on a Windows or MAC OS machine. Future enhancements will enable connectivity to HDTVs for displaying photos or videos.

“The success of the Apple iPhone and iPod motivated us to apply the simplicity of our low power WUSB solution to the needs for high throughput wireless connectivity for synchronization” said Eric Broockman, CEO at Alereon. “Our new AL5301, because of its low power consumption, allowed us to produce a small form factor ideal for use with Apple’s elegant iPhone family”

In addition to reducing the size and power consumption of wireless USB hardware, Alereon is also now delivering a next generation of software that provides increased throughput together with a simpler user installation experience. This includes a new Driverless USB dongle which simplifies the installation process by not requiring any drivers to be installed on the PC. Simply plug in the dongle and it is ready to connect straight out of the box. Alereon has also increased WUSB performance, providing over 130Mbps of delivered throughput for native mass storage applications, over 175Mbps for video applications over Wireless USB and over 200Mbps of throughput for future DLNA based applications.

The AL5301 is pin for pin compatible with the prior AL5300 which enables OEMs to easily transition existing products to this device to capitalize on the AL5301′s lower power consumption and enhanced feature set.

Alereon’s AL5000 solution family includes a full set of host and device solutions including a WUSB half MiniCard, device MiniCard, ExpressCard, USB Adapter, hub and graphics adapter. Each of these solutions has achieved FCC regulatory certification and meets stringent UWB regulatory requirements with one SKU for sale in the EU, Japan, China and Korea.
